So who is Akon? To understand it, it would be quite obvious to learn about his roots, his origin. His father who often visited the States became familiar with the country and its legislation. That’s why he made up his mind to do his best to make his children voting citizens of the US. It explains why all his children were born in the USA but afterwards his wife took their children and came back to Senegal. When Akon was seven year old, his family moved to the US for good.
Akon spent his child and teen ages in New Jersey. At first he could hardly manage to find a common language with the local boys. 'I had to accommodate myself. I spoke with a terrible accent, my skin was awfully black and as you can see I don’t seem like an Afro-American, I am a real Afro. I was like a clown at school', - smiled Akon. But it took a little time for Akon to learn the street ethics. Though, at long last he had to drop out because of strong struggle for respect between him and boys of his age.
Later Akon’s father moved to Atlanta but he offered son to decide between two things - stay in New Jersey or go with family yet come back and finish school. The choice wasn’t a hard one, and soon the family obtained a foothold in Atlanta. According to Akon, it was there in Atlanta where he reappraised many things in his life, including his attitude towards music.
Here he saw hip-hop in a different light, because before he didn’t admit it. 'I sneezed at this style; it was as if I were on the opposite of its troubles until I got myself into a mess as well as every one who plays hip-hop.' And then Akon started and tried to blend hip-hop with his own way of singing. 'I tried to create my hip-hop, and the fact I was surrounded with so many styles of music couldn’t but reflect on it.' Just then Akon gave it a serious thought to become a singer. A bit later there arose a lucky hit. He fell into company with Divine Stevens, a choreographer who worked with Usher, Mariah Carey and others.
The further course of events advanced in keeping with the best traditions of American Dream - Divine Stevens felt it was something special in Akon, and called Kenney Burns, a producer from Roc-A-Fella Records, who in turn called Steve Rifkind. The latter auditioned demo-records of Acon by phone - and the fat is in the fire!
